As we enter Maslinica, what stands before us is not just an old castle by the sea. It is a place where one family once tried to tame the sea, the wind, and the fears of their time.

More than three centuries ago, this bay was almost deserted. Only a few fishermen’s houses, stone, pine trees, and the open sea stretching toward the horizon. Then the noble Marchi family arrived here and built a fortified castle on the very edge of Šolta — as protection from pirates, but also as a sign that life could exist even on the border of a restless sea. And it was around this stone castle that Maslinica slowly began to grow.

But what makes this story special is not only defense and nobility. The Marchi family brought with them the spirit of the Mediterranean — education, languages, trade, connections with European cities, and the feeling that even a small island bay could become part of a much larger story.

That is why Maslinica still carries an unusual silence today. As if it was not created by chance, but carefully… between stone and sea. And when you look at the thick walls of the castle, it is easy to imagine another time — sails on the horizon, guards watching the open sea, and people seeking safety here while the waters around them never truly rest.

Today, that castle has been transformed into the Martinis Marchi heritage hotel. But the sea before it still preserves the same feeling: that the most beautiful Dalmatian bays were often born exactly where fear, hope, and the sea once met.
